Meningiomas

Possible locations of skull base meningiomas (left) and convexity meningiomas (right).

Meningiomas are the most common benign tumors of the central nervous system and they originate in a tissue called the meninges which covers the brain. A meningioma can either be located at the skull base or on the surface of the brain, which is called the convexity.

At the skull base, a meningioma may be located in a region similar to that of the acoustic neuroma and cause similar symptoms. Generally, surgical treatment results in elimination of the disease. In some rare cases, the meningioma is treated, and this is then complemented with radiosurgery.
